Focused on Mississippi: 125th anniversary of Vicksburg National Military Park

SUMMARY: 30 years after the Civil War, petitioners from North and South urged the formation of a national park to preserve the Battleground surrounding Vicksburg. In 1899, Vicksburg Park was established, becoming the fifth National Military Park in America. Today, Vicksburg National Military Park houses the second-largest national cemetery in the US, with over 18,000 Union Civil War troops buried here. The park features over 1,400 statues, monuments, and markers that interpret the events of the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. The iconic Illinois Monument with 47 steps represents each day of the Siege. Visitors can ponder the history and reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought during the war while touring the park.
