EPA cancels $7 billion Biden-era grant program to boost solar energy
SUMMARY: The EPA, under Trump-appointed Administrator Lee Zeldin, ended a $7 billion grant program from the Biden-era Solar for All initiative, aimed at funding residential solar projects for over 900,000 low-income U.S. households. The program, part of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund authorized by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, had awarded funds to states and tribes for renewable energy projects, with only $53 million spent so far. Critics, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and solar industry leaders, argue the termination is illegal and counterproductive amid rising energy costs and climate threats. Legal challenges are ongoing, with courts blocking contract freezes, as opposition accuses the administration of favoring fossil fuels.

Czech zoo welcomes 4 rare Barbary lion cubs whose population is extinct in the wild
SUMMARY: Four Barbary lion cubs were recently born at the Dvůr Králové Safari Park in the Czech Republic, aiding conservation efforts for this rare subspecies extinct in the wild. The three females and one male will be sent to other zoos, including Israel’s Beersheba zoo, under an international endangered species program. Once native to North Africa’s Atlas Mountains, Barbary lions were wiped out by hunting and habitat loss, with the last wild sighting in 1925. With fewer than 200 in captivity, plans for reintroduction are being discussed with Moroccan authorities, aiming for sustainable release despite significant challenges.
