Escaped inmate accused of killing deputy captured

SUMMARY: A manhunt was conducted in Simpson County for 22-year-old Joachin Blackwell, who shot and killed a 77-year-old sheriff’s deputy. Blackwell was found less than 24 hours later in a wooded area near the escape scene and was taken into custody with the help of wildlife and fisheries officers. The suspect appeared disheveled and had an ankle injury. Blackwell had escaped while being escorted by Deputy James Blair, overpowering the transport officer and fleeing into the woods. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, but the community showed tremendous support in helping to capture Blackwell.

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office says an escaped inmate believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of a deputy has been captured.

Carly Gregg convicted of all charges

SUMMARY: After nearly two hours of deliberation, the jury found Carly Madison Gregg guilty on all charges, including the murder of her mother, Ashley Smiley, attempted murder of her stepfather, Heath Smiley, and tampering with evidence. Gregg was sentenced to two life sentences without parole and ten years for tampering with evidence. Defense attorney Kevin Camp acknowledged the case’s difficulty and stated they rejected a 40-year plea deal offered by the state. State Attorney Katherine Newman said life imprisonment was the only suitable sentence. Judge Arthur ruled that all sentences will be served concurrently. An appeal is planned within 40 days.
