Drought impacting sweet potato harvest

SUMMARY: Most of the sweet potatoes in the state of Mississippi are grown in the far Northeast region of the state, which has not been affected by the recent flood conditions. However, the excessive heat and dryness have negatively impacted this year’s sweet potato crops. According to sweet potato specialist Lauren Harvey, the dry weather has affected production more than most growers expected, with irrigated acres performing better than those on dry land. The lack of precipitation has resulted in a variety of sizes and increased chances of skinning, making it difficult to plan for harvest. Roughly 65 commercial growers in Mississippi planted around 28,000 acres of sweet potatoes this year.
