Dr. Tracy Cook has interim tag removed, named president of Alcorn State
SUMMARY: Dr. Tracy Cook has been appointed as the permanent president of Alcorn State University after serving in an interim role for over eight months. Cook, an Alcorn State alumnus and former football standout for the school, previously held the position of vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. The announcement was made by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. Having earned degrees from Alcorn and a doctorate from William Carey University, Cook brings over 25 years of experience in education to the role. He will be officially taking office on April 1, 2024, with an immediate challenge to address the university’s enrollment decline.

SUMMARY: Mississippi’s only major-league affiliated team, the Biloxi Shuckers, was eliminated from the 2025 Southern League playoffs after a 4-2 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits in game two of the Division Series. This marks the second consecutive year Montgomery has ousted Biloxi. The Shuckers finished the season 74-64, winning the South Division first-half title. Manager Joe Ayrault, who battled and beat stage 3 colon cancer during the season, praised the team’s effort. Despite an early lead from Jesus Made’s homer and Blake Burke’s RBI single, Montgomery rallied in the eighth inning to win. Biloxi’s next season starts April 3, 2026.

Delta State officials counter rumors as investigation continues into Black student found hanging
SUMMARY: Delta State University and law enforcement held a press conference regarding the death of 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, found hanging on campus. Despite social media claims of a lynching, police reported no evidence of foul play or assault injuries. Reed’s body was sent for further examination, with preliminary autopsy results expected soon.
