Downtown Hattiesburg development continues; New lofts set to open in April
SUMMARY: Developer Joel Ingram is renovating the old Comp Equipment Building in Downtown Hattisburg to create 18 apartment units and commercial space. The building has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s, supplying the rail and timber industries. The restoration project aims to preserve the building’s unique features, such as original timbers and industrial artifacts. The apartments range from studios to two-bedrooms, with modern amenities and a nod to the building’s industrial past. The project is part of a larger effort to revitalize downtown Hattisburg, with support from local programs and historic tax credits. Ingram and his team hope to attract diverse residents and contribute to the city’s thriving downtown community.
New projects continue to emerge in downtown Hattiesburg, where there are a lot of buildings being renovated.

Asian needle ants spotted in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Asian needle ants, an invasive species from East Asia, have been spotted in at least 17 states, including Mississippi and Texas. These ants deliver a painful sting that can pierce clothing and inject venom causing severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis, which may lead to swelling, breathing difficulties, and rapid heartbeat. At least three people in Georgia required hospitalization after stings last year. Unlike the non-dangerous Joro spider recently spreading through the Southeast, the Asian needle ant poses a serious health risk. Experts warn residents to remain vigilant to prevent these ants from nesting and spreading further across the U.S.
The Asian needle ant has been spotted in several U.S. states, including Mississippi.
