Downtown Aberdeen federal courthouse formally reopens

SUMMARY: The Thomas O. P. Abney Federal Building, once plagued by mold since its construction in 1974, has undergone extensive renovations costing nearly $27 million. Judge Sharon Acock highlighted the health issues faced by staff due to mold exposure, leading to threats against the General Services Administration for failing to address the problem. The mold originated from sealed windows that caused condensation. After more than six years of dislocation, the court is finally restored and ready for full-time operation. A gathering was held to celebrate this milestone, marking the Court’s return and the efforts of those involved in the renovations.

A mold problem led to the courthouse being closed for more than six years.
