Newsmaker: Vaccine requirements for schools
SUMMARY: As students return to Robertson County Schools, vaccine requirements are in focus. Kindergarteners must have vaccines for DTaP, polio, MMR, and chickenpox. Seventh graders need an additional Tdap booster. Parents should consult pediatricians for schedules and submit Tennessee vaccination certificates before school starts. A grace period allows students with appointment cards to attend temporarily, but missing appointments may have repercussions. The district enforces uniform policies, and vaccines can be obtained at health departments, pediatricians, or clinics. New students from other states must update immunizations to Tennessee standards. Parents are urged to keep sick children home 24 hours to prevent disease spread during school.

Tennessee schools are updating classroom cellphone policies as required by new law
SUMMARY: Middle Tennessee school districts are implementing new cellphone restrictions to comply with a state law banning phone use during classroom instruction, effective July 1. While Wilson County allows phone use between classes, Rutherford County requires phones be stored away all day, with exceptions for special events. Some schools, like Independence Academy, use locking pouches to encourage social interaction. Experts warn smartphone overuse harms teens’ social skills and concentration. The law permits phone use during emergencies, though access could be challenging where phones are locked. School boards must post their policies publicly and ensure compliance with the law.
