Cost of building AL super size prison expected to exceed $1 billion

SUMMARY: The cost of a new prison in Alabama has reached one billion dollars, posing a challenge to the state’s plan of constructing two such facilities. The Alabama Corrections institution Finance Authority has approved a final price of 1.08 billion dollars for the prison currently being built in Elmore County. This cost will consume a significant portion of the 1.25 billion dollars allocated by lawmakers in 2021 to build two prisons, each capable of accommodating four thousand inmates. Governor K Ivey has attributed the price escalation to inflation.

Law makers in Alabama expect the cost of a new super size prison that is already under construction will exceed over $1 billion.
