Column: Mississippians feeding Mississippians – SuperTalk Mississippi
SUMMARY: The writer expresses deep affection for Mississippi and its contributions to the arts and culture, while acknowledging the state’s challenges, especially regarding hunger. In response to a local mission pantry’s crisis, the writer initiated a practical solution, Extra Table, to combat food insecurity with efficient principles: all funds raised for food go to food purchase, and the food delivered is healthy. The nonprofit organization grew quickly, focusing on regular, nutritious food deliveries to various agencies and addressing hunger throughout the year. The writer highlights the generosity of Mississippians and encourages donations to continue assisting those in need through extratable.org.

SUMMARY: Mississippi College (MC) has partnered with the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson to provide clinical training for counseling students. Through a memorandum of understanding, MC will send qualified counseling students to the VA, allowing them to gain hands-on experience by offering mental health services to veterans under supervision. Students begin working at the VA after completing core courses and entering the clinical phase, where they will manage treatment plans and case notes. This new affiliation, starting this fall, aims to reduce veterans’ wait times and enhance access to counseling, marking MC’s first collaboration with a VA Medical Center.
