SUMMARY: Efforts to allow the sale and transport of deer and related material in Mississippi pose a significant threat to the state’s white-tailed deer population due to the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The state has a tradition of public trust ownership of wildlife, which is under threat by these proposals. There’s concern that commercialization could lead to practices similar to market hunting, which historically depleted species. A unanimous House vote recently reaffirmed that wildlife cannot be commoditized, but further legislative and gubernatorial support is needed to uphold this stance.
