Lebby embraces ‘gauntlet’ of schedule as opportunity for Mississippi State
SUMMARY: In Jeff Lebby’s second year as Mississippi State head coach, the Bulldogs face a pivotal season with a daunting sixth-toughest schedule nationally, including games against Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. After a 2-10 debut season marked by defensive struggles, Lebby remains optimistic, focusing on opportunity and improvement. The team benefits from key returners like quarterback Blake Shapen and linebacker Isaac Smith, alongside many new players from recruiting and the transfer portal. To bolster the defense, Mississippi State added experienced coaches such as Paul Rhoads and Mike MacIntyre. Lane Kiffin challenges revenue sharing cap enforcement, trolls Hugh Freeze at SEC Media Days
SUMMARY: Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss head coach, criticized the flawed regulation of college football at SEC Media Days, focusing on the new federal settlement allowing schools to pay athletes up to \$20.5 million but capping NIL deals over \$600 through a Deloitte-managed clearinghouse. Kiffin’s program operates under this budget cap but suspects others are violating it without clear penalties. He doubts the system’s effectiveness in ensuring fairness and salary cap adherence. Despite concerns, he believes revenue sharing will promote roster parity. Kiffin also playfully targeted former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze with trolling jabs, continuing their public banter.

SUMMARY: The NTSB released its report on the May 17, 2023, plane crash that killed former Mississippi state senator Johnny Morgan. Morgan flew his Beech E-90 from Oxford to Arkansas for autopilot maintenance despite an avionics technician’s advice to delay due to bad weather. Hand-flying the plane amid overcast conditions, Morgan became spatially disoriented during an instrument approach, causing a rapid descent and crash that left him dead. No mechanical faults caused the crash. Morgan, 76, served as a state senator and county supervisor and co-founded Morgan White Group. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves praised his loyalty and political involvement.
