Cold weather makes fighting fires even tougher

SUMMARY: Firefighters in Jones County were fighting flames this morning in frigid temperatures of just 20 degrees. The fire department reported that the cold weather was causing unique challenges, such as getting to the fire due to ice on the roads and freezing water lines when attempting to put out the flames. Fighting the fires in below freezing temperatures also presented the risk of hypothermia. Dana Bumgardner of the Jones County Fire council stated that the cold weather was especially hard on the firefighters, possibly leading to exposure to hypothermia. Multiple out-of-control brush fires were reported today, and almost every department in Jones County assisted in extinguishing them.
