Closure, consolidation of over a dozen Jackson public schools approved following decline in enrollment
SUMMARY: The Jackson Public School’s Board of Trustees has decided to close or consolidate over a dozen schools by the end of 2024 because of declining enrollment and staffing issues. This plan was established following extensive discussions and has removed three elementary schools from the initial list. The decision, which passed in a 5-1 vote, encompasses 13 schools, including middle, elementary, and high schools, and is aimed at addressing facility infrastructure and staffing challenges. The district has experienced a drop of about 10,000 students over ten years, as well as over 400 staff vacancies. JPS Superintendent Dr. Errick Greene believes the changes will save the district $17 million annually and avert $174 million in renovation expenses.
