Cleveland business owner found guilty of COVID relief fraud
SUMMARY: Ethel Cain, owner of Lifeline Financial Freedom Solutions in Cleveland, Mississippi, has pleaded guilty to defrauding a government COVID stimulus program. She submitted nearly $400,000 in fraudulent grant applications to the Mississippi Development Authority for the CARES Act “Back to Business” program. Despite submitting multiple requests, most were denied, leading to an investigation by the state auditor’s office. Agents identified $38,500 in improper grant payments to her company. This is the first COVID stimulus fraud case handled by State Auditor Shad White’s office. Cain awaits her sentencing date following her conviction by a Bolivar County jury.

SUMMARY: Southern Miss and Ole Miss remained in D1Baseball’s top 25 for the 11th week as postseason approaches. Ole Miss faces Mississippi State this weekend.

Nonprofit files lawsuit challenging legislation allowing private leasing of public oyster reefs
SUMMARY: A lawsuit has been filed against legislation allowing the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) to lease public oyster reefs to private entities. Mississippi Commercial Fisheries United argues that Senate Bill 2648, which permits up to 80% of the state’s natural reefs to be leased, is unconstitutional and threatens local fishermen’s livelihoods. The group claims the law undermines public access to the reefs, turning traditional oystermen into dependent workers for private leaseholders. They demand an immediate halt to leasing, transparent impact assessments, and more community involvement in decisions regarding public waters and resources. No comment has been made by MDMR.
