City of Petal to start adding fluoride to water

SUMMARY: The city of Petal accepted a $35.7 thousand dollar bid to begin adding fluoride back into its water supply. They had stopped fluoride supply in 2011 due to supply issues during the COVID pandemic. While many believe fluoride is good for healthy teeth, others are questioning its actual benefit. Gerald Steele, an alderman of the city, said that the mineral will only be served by the Petal water department, but it will impact everyone in the city. The city expects to have fluoride back pumping in early. Many believe fluoride can help strengthen teeth, while others are concerned about potential negative effects.

At their Dec. 5 meeting, the Board of Aldermen accepted a $35,765 bid to replace the pumps and mixing chambers and buy the start-up fluoride supply.
