Charlotte, a stingray with no male companion, is pregnant in her mountain aquarium
SUMMARY: Charlotte is a rust-colored stingray living in a storefront aquarium in North Carolina, far from her natural habitat in southern California, with no male stingray companion for at least eight years. Surprisingly, she’s pregnant with as many as four pups, a result of parthenogenesis – a type of asexual reproduction. This underscores nature’s adaptability, says Brenda Ramer, executive director of the aquarium. The phenomenon is rare but not unheard of in other fish and reptiles. The stingray is thriving and the aquarium is readying a larger tank to accommodate her and her offspring. Contrary to previous mistaken reports, Charlotte couldn’t have mated with a shark due to anatomical and genetic differences.

SUMMARY: A fatal shooting occurred in Gulfport on April 28, 2025, when suspects Paul Ravin Martin Jr. and Kevin Eugene James opened fire on individuals in the Holly Circle area. Three victims were injured, and 16-year-old Cobi Earnest later died from gunshot wounds. Martin, 23, was arrested and charged with First-Degree Murder, Shooting into a Dwelling, and three counts of Aggravated Assault. He was out on bond for a previous drive-by shooting.
