Can public money go to private schools? Mississippi Supreme Court hears arguments

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court heard arguments in a case involving the funding of private schools with federal money. Parents for Public Schools sued the state, claiming that funding private schools with tax-payers’ dollars is illegal and violates Section 208 of the Mississippi Constitution. The Midsouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) argues that federal funding is not state funding and should be allowed. The defense also argues that Section 208 was enacted to discriminate against Catholic schools educating newly freed slaves. The case stems from a bill signed by Republican Governor Tate Reeves to create a program for federal money to fund private schools.
