SUMMARY: South Korea’s Supreme Court rejected American composer Jonathan Wright’s $21,600 damage claim against Pinkfong, ending a six-year legal battle over the “Baby Shark” song. Wright alleged Pinkfong plagiarized his 2011 version, but courts ruled both versions derived from a traditional folk melody, with Wright’s lacking sufficient originality for copyright protection. The Supreme Court upheld that Pinkfong’s rendition, released in 2015, added distinct elements, confirming it as a separate work based on a public domain chant. Pinkfong’s “Baby Shark” became a global hit with over 16 billion YouTube views, generating significant revenue and spawning various media adaptations.

SUMMARY: In Gulfport, Mississippi, children being accidentally locked in hot cars during summer is a frequent emergency, though recent deaths are rare. Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan explains these incidents often occur when parents are distracted. Heatstroke is a serious risk, with 39 child deaths reported in 2024 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A child’s body heats up faster than an adult’s, making quick action vital. Firefighters assess the child’s condition and may break windows if unconscious. NHTSA advises placing essential items in the backseat, using reminders like toys, and keeping keys away from children to prevent lock-ins.

SUMMARY: U.S. wholesale inflation unexpectedly surged 0.9% in July, the largest monthly rise in over three years, driven by President Trump’s tariffs raising import costs. Wholesale prices rose 3.3% year-over-year, with core producer prices climbing 0.9% from June. Importers are currently absorbing tariff costs, but higher consumer prices seem inevitable. Retailers’ profit margins oddly increased despite tariff pressures, possibly reflecting economic uncertainty linked to trade deals and court challenges to tariffs. Consumer inflation rose 2.7% yearly in July, above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. This inflation data complicates the Fed’s decision on interest rates, likely delaying expected cuts.
