Baby Loggerhead sea turtles leave nest for Gulf
SUMMARY: Last night, a rare event occurred on Christiane’s Beach. 12 live baby loggerhead sea turtles were dug out of their nest by the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. This is an extremely uncommon occurrence, as only 84 eggs were laid and it can take up to 30 years before turtles reach adulthood and begin laying their own eggs. Nesting on our beaches is also rare, with the last successful hatchlings occurring in 2018. This highlights the importance of protecting these endangered species and their nesting grounds.
A dozen Loggerhead baby sea turtles made it to the Mississippi Sound after they were found alive in their nest Tuesday.
