SUMMARY: Plans to reintroduce Amtrak passenger services along the Mississippi Gulf Coast are at risk due to insufficient support from city officials in Alabama. In 2022, an agreement was made for a route from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans, Louisiana, with stops in Mississippi. However, Alabama officials now want Mobile to cover much of the state’s financial share. For the project to proceed, approval from five of Mobile’s seven city councilmen is required, but only three support it. Despite the Alabama Port Authority agreeing to cover $1 million of the expenses, Mobile leaders are concerned about future financial impacts. Mayor Sandy Stimpson remains hopeful but is uncertain about securing the necessary votes.

Reeves said the Guard will help “restore law and order” and ensure public safety. Trump has 30 days of emergency control but may extend it through a national emergency. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing over the takeover. Other GOP governors are also sending troops.
