A proposal to merge 2 universities fizzles in the Mississippi Senate
SUMMARY: A proposal to merge Mississippi University for Women into Mississippi State University was shot down in the state Senate. However, the future of MUW is still uncertain due to a bill that passed the Senate, proposing to study whether some of Mississippi’s public universities should be closed. Despite concerns about the financial sustainability of all eight public universities in the state, a bill to merge MUW was rejected in the Senate. University leaders, alumni, and students are fighting to keep MUW open amidst these uncertainties, including discussions about changing the university’s name to attract more students.
