USM School of Media and Communication Home to New Roy Howard Community Journalism Center
SUMMARY: The University of Southern Mississippi is launching the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center in fall 2024 to train journalists in providing important, fact-based reporting for under-reported communities in the state and combatting disinformation. Named after Roy W. Howard, the center will educate students in providing reliable news coverage, debunking false information, and promoting media literacy. It will also establish partnerships and bureaus in different locations to create professional-level local content and build trust with the community. The center aims to address the news desert in Southeast Mississippi and provide real-world experiences for students while upholding professional journalism standards.

CASA of South Mississippi’s 11th Annual Poker Run set for next Saturday, June 22nd in Bay St. Louis @ Dan B’s
SUMMARY: CASA of South Mississippi will host its 11th Annual Poker Run, sponsored by Casano Law Firm, Lindsey Lind Richard of Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty, and Parker Contracting, LLC, on June 22, 2024, at Dan B Murphy's Restaurant & Bar in Bay St. Louis. Participants can pre-register at the CASA office or register on the day starting at 12 PM. The event includes various stops, such as The Blind Tiger, Cuz's Old Town Oyster Bar & Grill, and Daiquiri Shak, with a live auction following the Poker Run. West Harrison teenager Kinsley McBride earned the right to compete in the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Des Moines, Iowa
SUMMARY: Kinsley McBride, a rising 8th grader from West Harrison, excels in multiple rodeo events, driven by a lifelong fascination with horses. Starting lessons due to her grandmother's influence, she has been training horses since age three. Her bond with her horse Houdini, whom she began working with at six, is crucial to their success. McBride competes in various events including pole bending and breakaway roping, and recently qualified for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Alongside her rodeo aspirations, she prioritizes her studies and spiritual life, aiming to compete in college rodeos and potentially the National Rodeo Finals.
