MDOT executive director responds to Lt. Gov. Hosemann’s call for more spending oversight
SUMMARY: Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann is calling for more oversight of state spending in Mississippi, specifically when it comes to funding for transportation projects. He wants to ensure that all the money allocated for roads and bridges is being used properly and in a timely manner. Brad White, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), stated that no projects are currently behind schedule and that accountability is essential. White also explained that the agency follows strict federal regulations for road construction, which can sometimes slow down the process. MDOT is currently working on several projects throughout the state.

GOP rep wants ‘Elvis or nothing’ if Mississippi removes Confederate statues from Washington
SUMMARY: Arkansas recently installed a statue of civil rights icon Daisy Bates in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, spurring discussions among Mississippi lawmakers to replace their two Confederate statues—Jefferson Davis and James Z. George. Democrats have consistently supported replacement, and although Republicans haven't opposed it outright, it hasn't been a priority due to pressing issues like K-12 funding. GOP Rep. Fred Shanks highlighted that cost and constituent opinions need consideration. Possible replacements include civil rights figures Fannie Lou Hamer and Hiram Revels, or cultural icons like Elvis Presley. Other states like Arkansas have similarly replaced Confederate statues with artists and civil rights figures.
