Man convicted of assault and exploiting child gets life sentence

SUMMARY: John McElhenney, a 29-year-old man charged with child assault and exploitation, has been sentenced to life without parole. McElhenney pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery and one count of child exploitation as part of a court deal. Judge Randi Mueller said that McElhenney had stolen the child's innocence, calling out his betrayal of trust as someone who was supposed to protect the victim. Family members of the victim were present in the courtroom during the sentencing. McElhenney's attorney's request to ban media from the courtroom was denied by the judge.

USM Army and Air Force ROTC programs host Commissioning Ceremonies

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
