State Auditor Shad White Testifies to US House Ways & Means Committee on Welfare Case

SUMMARY: State Auditor Shad White has unveiled massive misappropriation of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds and discussed the matter with the US House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare. Tens of millions of dollars were misappropriated in Mississippi between 2016 and 2019, in the largest public fraud case in Mississippi history. White presented several reforms to prevent future fraud, including requiring state agencies to report improper spending to Congress and stricter eligibility criteria for TANF funds. Six individuals, including the former head of the Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS), have pleaded guilty to charges related to the fraud.

USM Army and Air Force ROTC programs host Commissioning Ceremonies

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
