85% of hospitals could now qualify for lifeline program, state health officer says

SUMMARY: Mississippi’s state health officer is working on a “workaround” to increase the number of hospitals eligible for a $103 million grant program. Currently, only a third of hospitals qualify, but the health officer hopes to raise that number to 85% by changing hospitals to beneficiaries rather than subgrantees. This change could potentially increase the number of hospitals receiving funds from 38 to at least 93 out of the 110 that have applied. The need for loopholes arises because the funds come from the American Rescue Plan Act instead of the general fund, which excludes hospitals that have already received relief funds. The proposed regulation changes would need approval from the federal government. If approved, it would prevent hospitals from having to repay the money in the future.

SUMMARY: Joe Max Higgins was abruptly removed as CEO of the Golden Triangle Development LINK after over 20 years, during which he facilitated over $10 billion in economic growth. The executive committee cited prolonged workplace behavior and speech inconsistent with organizational values, extending beyond mere profanity to conduct that could harm the community. His firing followed a committee vote deeming a leadership change necessary for the region’s long-term interests, despite some local officials viewing the decision as hasty. COO Meryl Fisackerly will lead during the CEO search, with stakeholder input encouraged. Higgins contributed to major projects including Steel Dynamics and Airbus plants and multiple megasites.
