SUMMARY: A low pressure area in Southern Minnesota is predicted to move to the Mid-Atlantic states by Tuesday night, calling for slightly cooler and drier weather. Despite the move, there is no significant expectation for a reduced heat index which will continue to range between 110-116 degrees. Less precipitation is also expected for the area as a result, as the upper ridge will move eastwards towards the end of the week. The precipitation is mostly expected to shift to lower coastal areas or offshore. Normal August weather patterns are anticipated by the coming weekend.

Pentagon steps up media restrictions, now requiring approval before reporting even unclassified info

SUMMARY: The Pentagon announced a new policy requiring credentialed journalists at its headquarters to sign a pledge not to report unauthorized information, including unclassified material. Violations risk losing access credentials, tightening media restrictions initiated under President Trump’s administration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized limiting reporters’ movements within the Pentagon. The move sparked strong criticism from press freedom advocates, who view it as government censorship and prior restraint undermining independent journalism and the First Amendment. The Pentagon has also faced recent embarrassments from leaks and security lapses. Media organizations warn the policy threatens transparency, democratic norms, and the public’s right to independent news about the military.

SUMMARY: Unknown musings of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Czechoslovakia’s first president and founding father, were recently unveiled from a sealed envelope long kept secret by the family. The notes, dictated to his son Jan around 1934 when Masaryk was ill, reveal reflections on his impending death, critical views on Czechs, Germans, and Slovak nationalist Andrej Hlinka. The documents, containing five pages in Czech and English, were entrusted to the National Archive in 2005 under a 20-year embargo. Experts affirm their authenticity, now ready for detailed study. Masaryk, a symbol of democratic statehood, led Czechoslovakia after its 1918 independence.

The oldest mummies in the world may hail from southeastern Asia and date back 12,000 years

SUMMARY: Scientists have discovered what may be the world’s oldest mummies, dating back up to 12,000 years in southeastern Asia. Unlike the well-known Egyptian mummies or the 7,000-year-old Chinchorro mummies from Peru and Chile, these ancient remains—found in China, Vietnam, and other parts of Southeast Asia—show evidence of smoke-drying by hunter-gatherer communities. The bodies were buried in crouched positions with cuts and burn marks, suggesting early mummification techniques that preserved spiritual and physical connections to ancestors. While the dating methods and consistency of the practice require further study, these findings significantly advance knowledge of prehistoric funerary customs.
