75% of Mississippi third graders pass reading test in 2024

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education announced that 75.7% of third graders passed the initial administration of the reading assessment for the 2023-24 school year. This percentage is similar to the pass rate for the previous year and higher than the rate before the pandemic. Students who do not pass the initial test have up to two more attempts to retest. The MDE is working to support instruction and resources aligned with the Science of Reading. Some students may qualify for exemptions to be promoted to fourth grade despite not passing the assessment.
