SUMMARY: A 70-foot steel cockroach, created by Bay Pest Control in Mississippi, was sunk 100 feet deep into the Gulf of Mexico as part of an artificial reef project. The cockroach, welded to a 150-foot tugboat, was placed offshore near Biloxi to aid marine life. This project is part of the Mississippi Artificial Reef Plan, which began in 1999 to restore ecosystems damaged by overharvesting and Hurricane Katrina. The reef aims to provide a breeding ground and food source for marine life, contributing to the Gulf’s ecosystem and revitalizing sports fishing in the region.

SUMMARY: A third-party investigation by SeaD Consulting revealed widespread mislabeling of seafood in coastal Mississippi restaurants, notably after Mary Mahoney’s Old French House faced scrutiny. The study found that 39% of “local” Gulf White Shrimp and 92% of Royal Red Shrimp served were actually cheaper, imported alternatives. About 82% of restaurants were misrepresenting their seafood, contributing to consumer mistrust and financial losses, with fraudulent dishes priced up to $24.95. The domestic shrimp industry’s market share has significantly declined, and transparency is urged to protect local fishermen and consumers. Only a few restaurants were found to offer genuine Gulf shrimp.
