SUMMARY: Gulfport’s Dairy Queen hosted its fourth annual Blizzard Battle on Miracle Treat Day, where Gulfport Fire and Police Departments competed to raise funds for Manning Family Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. The event honors the late Justin Herring, a beloved firefighter and three-time champion who passed away earlier this year. Five members from each department raced to finish 32-ounce Blizzards, with the Fire Department sweeping the victory again. Participants ate quickly, inspired by Herring’s memory. The Police Department was encouraged to practice for next year’s challenge. The fundraiser supports Children’s Miracle Network to aid the hospital’s greatest needs through donations.

However, some softness appears as job vacancies dropped to 7.4 million in June and quitting rates hit their lowest since December. Several major companies, including Intel and Disney, have announced layoffs, but overall unemployment benefit claims remain historically low.

SUMMARY: Workers at South Carolina’s Savannah River Site, a former nuclear bomb parts facility, found a wasp nest with radiation levels 10 times above federal limits near liquid nuclear waste tanks. The nest was removed and treated as radioactive waste, with no wasps found. Officials say no tank leaks were detected, suggesting the nest absorbed residual onsite contamination. However, watchdog group Savannah River Site Watch criticized the report for lacking details on contamination sources and leak possibilities. The site, now focused on nuclear fuel and cleanup, still holds 43 active underground waste tanks, down from its Cold War-era peak of producing plutonium bomb cores.
