3/25 – Trey Tonnessen’s “Tornado Watch” Monday Night Forecast
SUMMARY: The Weather Authority is predicting severe weather in Mississippi with an enhanced risk for severe weather in the orange-shaded areas and a slight risk in the yellow-shaded areas. Alerts are in place for gale warnings, wind advisories, and tornado watches. A cold front is driving a line of storms towards the Gulf Coast, with uncertainty whether the storms will be in a linear segment or broken up into individual cells. Strong winds and warm, humid air are contributing to the severe weather risk. Models show the storms moving through by late morning, with the possibility of individual cellular storms increasing the tornado threat. Stay tuned for updates on the evolving weather situation.
There are some small indications that the mid level heights could rise a little, but will likely remain steady all night and not actually drop until the early morning hours. The low level wind field already has been responding to the increase in lift but as the bulk of the strong mid level punch move into the northern portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley, the low level jet that was developing over the western Gulf and has aided in the convection off to our west will quickly lift north into Mississippi tonight and we could be at the tale end of the low level jet with the core all the way over western Tennessee. This would actually promote low level divergence as stronger southerly winds over southern Mississippi remove the air faster than the slightly weaker winds over Southern Louisiana can replace it.
As always: A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition. Be nice to each other.

New world record: lightning bolt flashes across sky for over 500 miles
SUMMARY: In October 2017, a new world record lightning bolt was detected, flashing across more than 500 miles. A study published in the American Meteorological Society Journal revealed satellite data showing a single lightning strike traveling from Texas through Oklahoma and Arkansas into Missouri. This surpassed the previous record of a lightning bolt stretching over South Mississippi in April 2020. The 2017 lightning event was part of a complex of storms stretching from Texas to South Mississippi, with satellite data indicating the bolt traveled 477 miles, setting a new record for the longest lightning flash ever observed.
The previous record was held by a bolt that flashed across the Gulf Coast and South Mississippi.

Officer-involved shooting in Gulfport was justified, AG says
SUMMARY: The Attorney General’s office has concluded its investigation into a 2024 officer-involved shooting at the William Bell Apartments in Gulfport. Police responded to reports of screams inside an apartment and found Kendrall Tate actively stabbing another man. The Gulfport police officer involved shot Tate, who later died from his injuries. The AG’s investigation determined the use of force was justified. This finding comes alongside reviews of two other officer-involved shootings in Corinth and Meridian, which were also examined by Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office.
After the investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Attorney General’s Office said the use of force was justified.
