'Big, Beautiful Bill' threatens SNAP benefits for thousands of South Carolinians

Published

www.youtube.com – WPDE ABC15 – 2025-07-05 08:45:06

SUMMARY: Thousands of South Carolinians could lose SNAP (food stamp) benefits if President Trump signs the major budget bill known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” This legislation proposes significant funding cuts and changes to eligibility, potentially reducing SNAP funding by $295 billion over ten years. About 30,000 households in the Tri-County area rely on SNAP, with 17,000 able-bodied adults aged up to 54 at risk of losing benefits due to stricter work requirements. Federal cuts may force South Carolina to cover 5-15% of costs. Advocates warn nonprofit efforts won’t close the large gap, pushing more families into poverty and creating administrative burdens.

Tens of thousands of South Carolinians could lose nutrition assistance if President Donald Trump signs a major budget bill into law in the coming days.

The so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” would cut funding and change eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) program, or better known as food stamps.

SNAP is currently fully federally funded but could see a budget reduction of about $295 billion over a decade, in Senate Republicans’ latest push to make the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent.
