Young sex assault survivor finally thriving after abuser begins prison sentence

SUMMARY: McKenna, a survivor of child sexual assault, is now thriving after her abuser, Vincent Wayne Michaelsson, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The abuse began when McKenna was just 10 years old, and Michaelsson, her mother’s boyfriend, kept it a secret. At 17, McKenna sought therapy and eventually helped build a case against him, which uncovered other victims. McKenna, now 21, feels a renewed sense of freedom and is committed to helping other survivors. She urges victims to know they’re not at fault and encourages them to reach out for support.

A child sexual assault survivor told KSAT her story as a means of pride and closure, but also to let other possible victims know it’s okay to come forward.
