Woman almost loses thousands of dollars in check washing crime

SUMMARY: A Wake County woman nearly lost thousands due to a check-washing scam, where thieves steal checks from mailboxes, erase details, and rewrite them to steal money. Jane O’Conor wrote a check for $85 but discovered thieves altered it to $4,600 and cashed it in their own name. Despite taking precautions by mailing her check directly at a post office, her check was intercepted—possibly stolen during mail transit. Authorities advise using gel pens that resist washing, mailing checks before the last pickup, and retrieving mail promptly. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office reports an increase in such crimes locally.

Checks taken from local mailboxes by thieves who change the information and take the money for themselves. Only on WRAL, a woman who thought she was taking all the right steps, still became a victim of check washing.

Tariffs on tomatoes send some shoppers to farmers market

www.youtube.com – ABC11 – 2025-07-15 21:07:11

SUMMARY: Tariffs on tomatoes, especially a 70% tariff on imports from Mexico—which supply two-thirds of U.S. tomatoes—are driving up prices nationwide. Restaurants like El Rodeo in Raleigh, which use thousands of tomatoes yearly for dishes like salsa and fajitas, are feeling the pinch and may raise menu prices. The increased cost is passed on to consumers, contributing to inflation. Meanwhile, local farmers markets are seeing a surge in customers seeking fresher, often cheaper, heirloom and other tomato varieties. Shoppers appreciate the better taste and quality of locally grown tomatoes, creating more business for local growers. The price impacts extend beyond fresh tomatoes to related products like sauces and salsas.

“For me, the locally grown stuff just has a better taste, it’s fresh, it’s always cut above what you’re gonna get in a store.”

5 On Your Side: New report reveals how quickly prices are rising

Published

on

www.youtube.com – WRAL – 2025-07-15 09:08:48

SUMMARY: A new report reveals inflation at 2.7%, matching experts’ expectations as tariffs impact the economy. Consumer prices for essentials like eggs rise steadily, but some categories, especially large appliances, outpace inflation with a 4.3% increase in May. This surge is linked to tariffs on imported parts. To manage costs, experts recommend repairing appliances instead of replacing them and shopping around, as many stores offer price matching and discounts. Despite common use, home warranty programs are discouraged due to frequent complaints; instead, saving money independently for repairs is advised to avoid unexpected costs.

For the past few months, the Consumer Price Index report has shown that the overall cost of products and services is about two to three percent higher than it was last year. But one category is rising even faster. 5 On Your Side’s Keely Arthur explains which ones — and what you can do about it.
