What’s happening to the former Brown’s Pottery site in Arden? What’s with the tree clearing across from Walmart on Airport Road? • Asheville Watchdog

The old Brown’s Pottery building in Arden, purchased by Vasiliy Klimovich and his twin brother, is undergoing a full renovation. Once rundown, the 8,560-square-foot structure will feature a rock facade, metal siding, and black windows. The brothers, who run a heavy truck parts business, may use it for that or sell it if the right offer comes along. Meanwhile, a new Sheetz gas station with a convenience store and cafe is being built on Airport Road near Walmart. Construction aims for completion by Christmas. Asheville Watchdog encourages community engagement and relies on donations to support its local reporting.

Today’s round of questions, my smart-aleck replies and the real answers:

Question: I would like to know what is happening at the old Brown’s Pottery location near the intersection of Hendersonville and Airport roads in Arden. There has been a lot of work on the building, and I’m curious about what it will be.

My answer: I just reflexively typed “brewpub.” Perhaps I’ve been doing this column a little too long.

Real answer: It’s not a brewpub! At least for now.

This building, which had been occupied by the Brown family for decades before their departure in 2019, had gotten a little rundown-looking, especially with the boarded-up windows. Built in 1941, the building has 8,560 square feet of finished space and sits on .29 of an acre.

Vasiliy Klimovich, 25, told me Monday that he co-owns the building with his twin brother. Signs on the building read, “Advanced Hauling, Reliable dump truck services,” and, “We sell dump trucks also.”

The brothers bought the building mostly because it was available and they thought it could make a good investment.

“We just decided we’re going to do something with it,” Klimovich told me, noting that the family runs a heavy truck parts business, Advanced Truck Parts, headquartered in Candler. “So we might do a parts business there, but the waters are open — we could sell it if someone comes up with a good, reasonable offer.”

Vasiliy Klimovich said he and his business partner, his twin brother, are completely renovating the former Brown’s Pottery building on Hendersonville Road at the corner of Buck Shoals Road. They stripped the building down to the studs, and they’re completely redoing the exterior as well. When finished, the building will have a rock facade on the lower part of the building and metal siding above. It will have black windows — when they arrive.

“The holdup right now is the windows,” Klimovich said, noting they had to install chain link fencing in the window spaces after thieves made off with the building’s copper.

The city required the concrete sidewalks that are on Hendersonville Road and the side street, Buck Shoals, but Klimovich said he’s fine with that because it gives the building a more inviting look. They also plan to put in concrete behind the building for more parking.

The spot is bounded by Hendersonville Road and train tracks, so parking would be limited.

The property is zoned community business II, which allows for a mixture of commercial and residential uses. So I joked with Klimovich that hey, it could be a brewpub.

He laughed and noted that people do love fighting for parking spaces at popular eateries and brewpubs. The main thrust of the project, which they hope to complete this summer, is to make the building more attractive for whatever use they decide on.

“It’s going to look nice,” Klimovich said.

Question: On Airport Road across from the Walmart and in front of Lutheridge (Camp and Conference Center), they’ve been clearing the lot that has had a “For Lease” sign up for a few years. What’s going in there? It doesn’t seem a large enough area for much.

My answer: I think we’ll all be relieved if this is not more parking for the airport.

Real answer: I stopped by Monday, and the land clearing and survey work was moving ahead full-tilt.

Connor Plos, a construction manager with the contractor on the property, Builtech Services LLC, said the site will become a Sheetz gas station, complete with convenience store and cafe.

Land clearing and grading were ongoing Monday at what will be a new Sheetz gas station across from Walmart on Airport Road. // Watchdog photo by John Boyle

Plos said this Airport Road Store will be “almost identical” to one Sheetz opened last year a few miles south on U.S. 25 off of the Mountain Home exit of I-26. The goal is to have the building done by Christmas.

The site is a little hilly, so the grading will require bringing it down some. It will remain a few feet above the grade of Airport Road, though, Plos said.

As far as the tree clearing, Plos said they try to remove as few as possible, but they have to be able to accommodate the Sheetz footprint.

“The logs are being repurposed, though, and they’re being sent off to be used,” Plos said. “They’re not just getting destroyed. And then all the brush will be turned into mulch.”

SUMMARY: A flooding emergency is unfolding across Orange and Durham counties after Tropical Storm Chantal’s remnants. In Durham’s Ripley Stream community near the Eno River, floodwaters have risen significantly, submerging cars and entering homes, forcing multiple evacuations. Residents face ankle-deep water inside homes, and emergency services have been active since early morning. Meanwhile, Chapel Hill’s Camelot Village apartments were inundated, with water reaching chest-high on first floors, displacing 60 people and prompting 50 water rescues. Debris and erosion blocked roads, and cars were swept away in parking lots. Recovery and cleanup are expected to take months as the community begins to assess damage.

Crews saved a total of 80 people by boat near homes close to flooded Eno River.

Elon’s America Party could be on North Carolina ballots in 2026 midterms | North Carolina

Published

on

www.thecentersquare.com – By Alan Wooten | The Center Square – (The Center Square – ) 2025-07-07 07:52:00

On Independence Day, Elon Musk proposed creating the America Party as an alternative to the traditional two-party system, supported by a social media poll showing 2-1 favorability. For recognition in North Carolina, the party must meet criteria such as achieving 2% of votes in the last general election, collecting signatures from 0.25% of registered voters by May 16, or fielding candidates in 70% of states during presidential elections. The America Party could qualify for the 2025 municipal elections. Musk’s platform emphasizes debt reduction, tech advancement, free speech, and centrist policies. Currently, four parties are recognized in North Carolina, with a large unaffiliated voting bloc.

(The Center Square) – After an Independence Day question on his social media platform, the world’s richest man offered Americans an alternative political party independent of Democrats and Republicans.

For North Carolinians, that means one of three criteria will have to be met before the America Party – or any other creations – can be officially recognized for purposes of being on the ballots.

Musk, a 53-year-old space and automotive industry phenom, served Republican second-term President Donald Trump in the Department of Government Efficiency. Reviews were mixed. On Friday, the 249th celebration of the Fourth of July, Musk asked on social media, “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?”

His poll, he reported the next day, was 2-1 in favor and he wrote, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Registration with the Federal Election Commission would be necessary on the national level.

For recognition by the North Carolina State Board of Elections, as outlined in the General Statutes, the three ways involve the options of a party’s voters getting at least 2% of the entire vote cast in the most recent general election; signature petition of at least 0.25% of all registered voters who voted in the most recent gubernatorial election; or a group of voters showing documentation the group had their candidate on the general election ballot in 70% of the states (35) in the most recent presidential election.

The first and third of those are moot at this point; the America Party was not in existence for the 2024 cycle. In fact, Musk was a significant campaign piece for Trump.

For petitions, they must be filed with the state board before noon on June 1 of the year of the election the party wishes to participate in. There’s also a stipulation that, so that counties can verify, the signatures must go to them 15 days before being due to the state. That’s May 16.

The 2025 cycle is known as municipal elections in the state, and 2026 is the midterms – second-longest ballot of the four cycles for the state. The America Party could get into place for next year.

Last year’s governor’s race drew 5,591,547 votes among Democrat Josh Stein, Republican Mark Robinson, Libertarian Mike Ross, Vinny Smith (Constitution Party) and Wayne Turner (Green Party). A quarter of 1% would be 13,979 (rounded up).

More than once, Musk reposted a question on party platform that listed reduce debt, responsible spending only; modernize military with artificial intelligence/robotics; pro tech, accelerate to win in artificial intelligence; less regulation across the board but especially in energy; free speech; “pro natalist,” a form of pronatalism or belief in human reproduction and a high birth rate; and centrist policies everywhere else.

Among other posts through the weekend from Musk, estimated Monday morning by Forbes at more than $405 billion, was one that included the following:

• Tesla will never succeed.

• Elon can’t start a space company.

• Neuralink will never work.

• SpaceX will never reuse a rocket.

• Elon can’t run a social media.

Three political parties lost recognition through the last cycle and North Carolina has four recognized today. Alphabetically, they are the Democratic Party, the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, and the Republican Party.

By registrations through Saturday, those unaffiliated (more than 2.8 million, or 38.3%) have the largest bloc, followed by Democrats (2.3 million, or 30.6%), Republicans (nearly 2.3 million, or 30.4%), Libertarians (only 45,986, or 0.6%) and Green (just 4,024, or 0.05%).

Political Bias Rating: Centrist

The article predominantly reports factual information about Elon Musk’s recent social media initiative to form a new political party called the America Party, outlining the legal requirements for new party recognition in North Carolina, voter registration statistics, and Musk’s political background. The tone is neutral, presenting Musk’s statements and related voting data without emotive or persuasive language. While it includes references to Musk’s own political history and platform ideas, it does so descriptively rather than endorsing or criticizing them. The article balances coverage of multiple parties and election rules, adhering to straightforward reporting rather than promoting an ideological stance, thus maintaining a centrist, neutral perspective.

www.youtube.com – ABC11 – 2025-07-06 22:40:19

SUMMARY: More than 400 first responders from 20 agencies have conducted over 1,000 rescues since Friday amid devastating floods in Central Texas. Floodwaters destroyed homes, toppled trees, and damaged bridges, including severe impact at Camp Mystic, where 750 girls were staying. Seven girls and one counselor remain missing. Rescuers use helicopters equipped with infrared cameras to locate victims in dense forests. Questions arise about the timing and adequacy of evacuation alerts issued by the Texas Department of Emergency Management, which warned of heavy rain and flooding two days prior. Among the victims is 27-year-old Julian Ryan, who died trying to escape rising floodwaters.

At least 82 people were killed and dozens are presumed missing after deadly flooding brought on by a heavy rain system in Central Texas.
