SUMMARY: Energy bars, popular snacks for about 40% of consumers, may not provide the healthy boost often assumed. Consumer Reports tested 31 bars, revealing many have sugar levels comparable to candy. Dietician Amy Keing emphasized examining ingredients beyond calories, particularly added sugars. Ideal bars include whole foods like nuts and seeds, while lower-quality options often rely on overly processed ingredients. Specific bars were praised or criticized for taste and nutritional value, with recommendations for limiting added sugars to seven grams. Always check labels, as seemingly healthy choices might actually be high in sugar, resembling candy more than nutritious snacks.
