What we know about the plane crash that killed 6, including alternative music executive Dave Shapiro
SUMMARY: A private plane crashed near San Diego’s Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in heavy fog, killing six people, including influential alternative music executive Dave Shapiro. The Cessna 550 Citation hit power lines about two miles from the airport, which had runway lights out and a broken weather alert system. Shapiro, owner of the plane and a pilot, was known for promoting punk and alternative bands. Other victims included musicians and agency employees. Despite poor weather and airport issues, the pilot chose to proceed. Eight on the ground were injured, but none seriously. Investigations may take a year to conclude.

What polling shows about Trump’s pivot from immigration to crime
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has shifted his focus from immigration to crime, boosting his approval ratings. A recent AP-NORC poll shows 53% of U.S. adults approve of his tough-on-crime approach, surpassing support for his handling of immigration, the economy, or the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump’s takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police and National Guard deployment, despite violent crime declines and local opposition, highlights this pivot. Meanwhile, public support for his aggressive immigration policies is waning, with controversies over deportations and federal agents stirring backlash. Trump’s crime focus aligns with Republican strengths and aims to dominate the agenda ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Top Fla. official says ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ will likely be empty within days
SUMMARY: The controversial Florida immigration detention facility in the Everglades, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” is expected to be empty within days, according to Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie. This follows a federal judge’s order to close the center by late October, which Florida and the federal government are appealing. The facility, opened in July with over $245 million spent, has faced opposition from environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe due to threats to sensitive wetlands. The judge mandated detainee transfers and removal of infrastructure, while Florida plans a second center called “Deportation Depot.” The stay request decision is pending.
