SUMMARY: Jacksonville City Council member Mike Gay introduced a resolution requesting the Florida Commission on Ethics to review General Counsel Michael Fackler’s decision to hire the Bedell law firm for a criminal gun registry case. Concerns arise due to Fackler’s father-in-law, Hank Coxe, being a partner at Bedell, prompting questions about potential conflicts of interest. The city, citing advice from local and state ethics offices, maintains no ethics violations occurred, emphasizing that anti-nepotism laws don’t apply to independent contractors. Mayor Donna Deegan supports seeking ethics rulings as routine. The resolution is under committee review, aiming to ensure legal compliance and transparency.

They will also revisit Louisiana’s congressional district maps amid Voting Rights Act debates and consider a Texas law requiring age verification for online pornography, balancing child protection with adult free speech rights.
