Wednesday 12PM Tropical Update: Hurricane Rafael now a Cat
SUMMARY: Meteorologist Pon Malone provides an update on Hurricane Raphael, a category 3 storm making landfall in Cuba, causing concerns for damaging winds and flooding in Havana. While Louisiana is currently experiencing warm weather, with a record high of 86 degrees, the storm is expected to stay south, minimizing direct impact. Rain chances may increase over the weekend as moisture from Raphael could lead to scattered showers, particularly Sunday morning. A slight cool front is anticipated next week, potentially lowering temperatures. Overall, the region should prepare for minimal impacts and remain alert for updates on the storm.
Rafael becomes a major hurricane (Cat 3) as it nears landfall in Cuba.
The storm will emerge in the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday evening where it will begin to restrengthen. We expect Rafael to remain a hurricane Thursday and Friday before wind shear and dry air weaken the storm. The intensity will decrease dramatically this weekend as wind shear blasts the storm.
With rapid weakening there might not be much left of the storm to bring impacts to the northern Gulf Coast. At most it looks like extra rain is possible later Sunday.

Potential tropical storm could possibly form today on the East Coast
SUMMARY: A potential tropical storm could develop today along the East Coast, with a 70% chance of formation, possibly becoming a named storm by tomorrow. Current weather shows hot temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, feeling like upper 90s to triple digits in some areas. Light, hit-or-miss showers are passing through, with occasional thunderstorms expected later this afternoon into the evening, especially near coastal and river parishes. By fireworks time, skies should clear up. Travelers along the coast and towards the Carolinas should prepare for rain through the weekend into Monday. Rain chances will increase late weekend, but no major washout expected today.
The NHC has an area of interest off the east coast of the United States highlighted for potential development this weekend.

‘I just want my wife back’: Baton Rouge veteran’s spouse faces deportation
SUMMARY: Adrian Clouatre’s wife, Paola, was arrested by ICE after discovering a 2018 deportation order during a TikTok search. Paola, who came to the U.S. from Mexico as a child and has been homeless due to family issues, is now detained at Richwood Correctional Center. Adrian, a former Marine, struggles to explain the situation to their children and visits her when possible. Immigration attorney Aaron Cash notes increased arrests under the Trump administration, even for non-criminals. ICE denies inhumane treatment claims. Louisiana leaders react to passing of President Donald Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’
SUMMARY: Louisiana leaders reacted strongly after President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” passed both the Senate and House, now heading to Trump’s desk for signature. The bill includes permanent extension of 2017 tax cuts, no taxes on tips, \$350 billion for border security, and aims to cut $1.5 trillion in federal spending over 10 years, though it risks Medicaid coverage loss for 12 million Americans. Louisiana Republicans, including Congresswoman Julia Letlow, Gov. Jeff Landry, Speaker Mike Johnson, and Senator Bill Cassidy, praised the bill’s tax relief, border security, and educational provisions. Democrats, led by Congressman Cleo Fields and Troy Carter, condemned it for massive healthcare and food assistance cuts impacting millions in Louisiana. The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry supported it for promoting economic growth. The bill passed narrowly amid strong partisan divides.
