UK inflation rises to its highest in over a year after domestic bills spike
SUMMARY: Inflation in the U.K. rose to 3.5% in April, its highest in over a year, driven by increased domestic bills, including energy and water, as well as higher business taxes and a significant minimum wage hike. This was a sharp rise from 2.6% in March and above expectations of 3.3%. Economists predict inflation will remain above 3% for the rest of the year, reducing chances of further interest rate cuts by the Bank of England, which targets 2%. However, inflation is expected to ease in 2026, partly due to a new trade deal with the U.S. that removes certain tariffs.

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to block watchdog access to DOGE documents
SUMMARY: The Trump administration requested the Supreme Court to block court orders requiring Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to disclose documents to a watchdog group. The Justice Department argues DOGE, key to Trump’s government overhaul, is a presidential advisory body exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington sued, citing DOGE’s broad, opaque powers affecting federal contracts and employees. A federal judge ruled DOGE likely holds more than advisory power, ordering disclosures by June 13. The administration called the orders overly broad and intrusive, appealing for swift Supreme Court intervention amid ongoing legal battles against Trump’s agenda.

President Trump’s Golden Dome missile program, GOP budget push
SUMMARY: Republicans in Congress are working to pass President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” before Memorial Day, with the House vote potentially happening today. The bill’s success depends on securing support from conservative Republicans, with President Trump actively pushing for votes. A key component of the bill is a \$25 billion request for the Golden Dome missile defense program, a concept similar to the Iron Dome in Israel. The bill faces internal GOP divisions, with conservatives concerned about insufficient cuts and moderates fearing cuts are too extreme. The challenge lies in balancing these differing views to ensure passage.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans for the Golden Dome missile defense system. Trump says the project will cost a total of $175 billion – $25 billion initial investment and another $150 billion to be budgeted over the course of two years. In addition, Trump’s “big, beautiful budget” plan remains mired in uncertainty despite a last minute, in-person pitch to House Republicans.
