U.S. food banks and pantries demand assistance ahead of holiday season
SUMMARY: Food banks and pantries across the U.S. are seeing increased demand this holiday season, driven by inflation and high grocery prices. A long-running California pantry now serves twice as many families as before, reflecting the nationwide struggle. The USDA reports over 47 million people lived in food-insecure households in 2023. While large food banks expand to meet the growing need, smaller ones, like Louisiana’s “little free food pantries,” offer local support. Volunteers and donations play crucial roles, ensuring those in need can receive food assistance, especially during the holidays. Resources for help and donation options are available on CBS Miami’s website.

CBS News’ Danya Bacchus takes a look at the efforts across the country as many folks struggle under the weight of inflation and high grocery prices.

Is this Florida swamp hiding a secret volcano? Here’s what we know
SUMMARY: In the 19th century, rumors circulated about a volcano in northwest Florida, known as the “Wakulla Swamp Volcano,” reportedly seen near Tallahassee’s swampy forests. Locals believed billows of smoke came from an unseen volcano, though theories suggested moonshine stills, geysers, or lightning strikes might explain the phenomenon. The legend gained attention, inspiring a poem and an expedition in the 1870s that ended tragically. Modern theories now suggest the smoke was likely caused by a peat fire, as Florida’s marshy areas are prone to such fires. The phenomenon seemed to cease after the 1886 Charleston earthquake, which may have blocked the source.

FL receives few complaints about immigration law enforcement
SUMMARY: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the state’s leadership in combating illegal immigration, emphasizing new reforms and collaboration with federal authorities. All 67 Florida sheriffs reportedly agreed to cooperate with federal immigration efforts, with noncompliance risking suspension. Florida’s immigration czar Larry Keefe introduced the Law Enforcement Accountability Dashboard (LEAD), a public portal for reporting agencies not enforcing immigration laws. In six weeks, only eight complaints were filed, including some against Palm Beach, Orlando, Jupiter, and Broward law enforcement. Complainant Sunny Crays expressed frustration over a lack of response from authorities. Keefe confirmed investigations are underway but provided no updates; DeSantis credits low complaints to stringent state legislation.
