Tuesday update on Tropical Storm Erin
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Erin, currently with 45 mph winds and moving west at 22 mph, is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane by Sunday as it moves over warmer waters. Most forecast models, including the American GFS and European models, predict the storm will curve northward, passing east of Bermuda and away from the Carolina coast. While a few model solutions show a more westerly track toward the Bahamas or U.S. coast, the majority indicate it will stay offshore. Residents are advised to prepare hurricane kits now, including water, food, flashlights, and medications, as the peak season approaches. Updates will continue.
By Sunday, Erin could become the first major hurricane of the season.

NC food banks can’t fill the hunger gap caused by federal SNAP cuts, nonprofit leaders say
SUMMARY: North Carolina faces a severe hunger crisis worsened by federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Nonprofits report a surge in military families seeking food aid near Fort Bragg, while Hispanic families hesitate to seek help due to immigration fears. Amy Beros, CEO of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, highlights a rise to over 600,000 food-insecure people in her region, with nonprofits unable to fill the funding gaps. State Sen. Lisa Grafstein criticizes cuts that threaten families’ food security, opposing trade-offs for tax breaks benefiting the wealthy. SNAP-ED funding for nutrition education is also at risk, impacting community programs.

Zelenskyy says ‘no sign’ Putin wants to end war as Alaska summit edges closer
SUMMARY: President Zelenskyy warns there is “no sign” that Putin wants to end the war in Ukraine as the US-Russia summit in Alaska approaches. Ahead of the Friday meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin, Trump is holding a virtual meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders to better understand how to end the conflict. Zelenskyy was not invited to the summit and insists Ukraine must be at the negotiating table for lasting peace. European and Ukrainian leaders emphasize that no terms should be imposed on Ukraine without its consent. Meanwhile, Russian forces are advancing, and critics warn the one-on-one summit favors Putin’s agenda.
Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange large drone attacks ahead of the summit.

The gerrymandering mess threatens to spiral out of control
SUMMARY: Demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. Supreme Court to demand fair districting maps amid growing concerns about gerrymandering, where politicians manipulate electoral maps for partisan gain. This practice has escalated alarmingly, threatening democratic fairness. In Texas, Republicans, encouraged by President Trump, are attempting to rig the 2026 midterm election maps in unprecedented ways, inspiring similar actions by both parties nationwide. Such gerrymandering undermines competitive elections and marginalizes moderate candidates, as seen repeatedly in states like North Carolina. This manipulation poses a significant threat to American democracy, and urgent action from congressional leaders is needed to stop it.
