SUMMARY: President Donald Trump will meet Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia. Al-Sharaa, once an al-Qaida insurgent and leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, helped overthrow Bashar Assad last year. Although al-Sharaa is wanted for terrorism charges in Iraq, Gulf leaders support his government as a counterbalance to Iranian influence in Syria. The U.S. has yet to recognize al-Sharaa’s regime or lift existing sanctions, but Trump is considering removing them to give Syria “a fresh start,” influenced by Turkey’s Erdogan. Trump is expected to express hopes for al-Sharaa’s success in stabilizing Syria, marking a shift from his prior skepticism.
