Trump budget cuts cause more unnecessary pain in NC
SUMMARY: The Trump administration’s cuts to vital public services, including the elimination of the AmeriCorps program, have sparked significant backlash. North Carolina anti-poverty advocates are actively challenging these cuts, which threaten to terminate thousands of young and senior volunteers who serve at over 700 locations across the state, including schools, food banks, and health clinics. The North Carolina Housing Coalition is suing over this decision. These cuts are seen as part of a broader effort to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, with critics arguing that such actions are both cruel and shortsighted.

Flesh-eating screwworm parasite confirmed in US
SUMMARY: The flesh-eating New World screwworm parasite, which feeds on living flesh of warm-blooded animals, has been confirmed in the US for the first time in a human case in Maryland, involving a traveler from El Salvador. This parasite causes severe infections as larvae burrow into wounds, posing a major threat to livestock and wildlife. While no cases have been reported in Texas, concerns persist due to infections in Mexico, including human deaths. Texas officials are working to control the parasite using fly bait and sterile flies from Panama to prevent reproduction and stop its spread, aiming to protect both animals and humans.
The first human case of the flesh-eating screwworm parasite has been confirmed in the U.S. Federal health officials say the risk to the public is low but concerns are growing in Texas, where the agriculture community is already on alert.

To require full Social Security numbers to register to vote, NC would need to hurdle a federal law
SUMMARY: North Carolina’s proposed House Bill 958 would require voters to provide their full Social Security numbers when registering, a move experts say violates the 1974 federal Privacy Act, which prohibits denying rights for refusing to disclose full SSNs. Current law accepts less sensitive identifiers like driver’s license numbers or the last four SSN digits. Critics, including privacy advocates and voting rights groups, warn this requirement risks identity theft and creates barriers to voting without enhancing security. Legislators sponsoring the bill have yet to justify the full SSN demand, and the measure faces legal and procedural challenges as it advances through the House.
