Trump budget cuts cause more unnecessary pain in NC
SUMMARY: The Trump administration’s cuts to vital public services, including the elimination of the AmeriCorps program, have sparked significant backlash. North Carolina anti-poverty advocates are actively challenging these cuts, which threaten to terminate thousands of young and senior volunteers who serve at over 700 locations across the state, including schools, food banks, and health clinics. The North Carolina Housing Coalition is suing over this decision. These cuts are seen as part of a broader effort to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, with critics arguing that such actions are both cruel and shortsighted.

Customers say their credit card information was stolen at drive-thru
SUMMARY: Customers reported credit card fraud linked to drive-thru payments at local Taco Bell locations. In these cases, employees allegedly swiped or photographed cards without customers’ knowledge, leading to unauthorized charges. One victim noted workers didn’t return her card, and fraud appeared within minutes. The restaurant owner, Luen Vantage Partners, said they investigate violations but gave no details on outcomes or disciplinary actions. Law enforcement advises customers to keep cards in sight or use tap-to-pay readers to prevent theft, and to monitor accounts for suspicious activity. Police note such fraud may be underreported, urging victims to report incidents promptly for investigation and protection.

Some people are having their credit card information stolen at some restaurant drive-thrus. WRAL’s 5 on Your Side learned about recent cases in our area and shared how you can best protect your money.

Improving health by cutting down on ultra-processed foods
SUMMARY: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs), such as sugary sodas, energy drinks, and prepackaged snacks, make up 60% of the average American diet. These foods are often high in added sugars, sodium, and artificial ingredients, contributing to weight gain and increasing the risk of diabetes. While avoiding all processed foods is difficult, choosing minimally processed options is ideal. Canned fish, pre-cooked soups, and whole grains are healthier alternatives, offering convenience without excessive additives. Nutritionist Amy Keading recommends focusing on whole foods and carefully checking labels for sodium content to improve overall health.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) like sugary drinks and packaged snacks constitute a large portion of the American diet and are linked to health issues like weight gain and diabetes due to their high sugar, sodium and additive content.
