Todd, Julie Chrisley released from prison after Trump pardon
SUMMARY: Todd and Julie Chrisley were released from prison this week following presidential pardons from Donald Trump. Todd was serving a 12-year sentence in Florida, and Julie a seven-year sentence in Kentucky, both convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud involving over $30 million. Their decade-long reality show, “Chrisley Knows Best,” showcased a glamorous lifestyle prosecutors say was built on deception. Their daughter Savannah campaigned for their release, claiming they were political targets due to their conservative views. The couple credits God and President Trump for their freedom. Their return to the public eye includes a new show on Lifetime documenting their experiences.

Todd Chrisley made his first public comments Friday since being released from prison following a pardon from President Donald Trump.

North Carolina elections take a risky turn
SUMMARY: On May 7, 2025, North Carolina’s new Board of Elections, appointed by Republican State Auditor Dave Boliek following a legislative power shift, took control. This move was prompted by Democrats’ narrow 2024 electoral victories, which ended the GOP’s veto-proof majority. Republicans passed Senate Bill 382, transferring board appointments from the Democratic governor to the auditor, consolidating election oversight under GOP control. Governor Josh Stein’s legal challenges citing executive authority were initially upheld in lower courts but overridden by GOP-dominated appellate courts. The new board’s leadership, including activist Francis DeLuca and gerrymandering proponent Robert Rucho, signals increased partisan interference in election administration, risking voter suppression.

Store evacuated following call about a suspicious package: police
SUMMARY: A mall in Durham was evacuated after a suspicious package was found near the Nordstrom store around 2:30 PM. Initially, only the Nordstrom area was closed, but the perimeter has since expanded, blocking all entrances and urging shoppers to leave safely. Police, bomb squad, hazmat, fire trucks, and paramedics remained on scene over three hours later. Shoppers reported police surrounding an SUV in the parking lot, inspecting it closely. Authorities have not disclosed package details but are treating the situation seriously. This follows a false alarm the previous night involving unsanctioned fireworks causing panic but no injuries.

Police are advising people to “avoid the area and to leave the area as quickly and safely as possible.”
