The great GOP tax shift continues to wreak havoc
SUMMARY: Over the past decade, North Carolina’s Republican-led legislature has severely underfunded public services, notably education, where per-student spending ranks 48th nationally. This decline results from substantial regressive state income tax cuts favoring wealthy individuals and corporations, shrinking state revenues by over 20% since 2009 despite population growth. The recent federal tax cuts will worsen funding shortfalls. Local governments, reliant on property taxes, face growing pressure as rising home values increase taxes on seniors and fixed-income residents, forcing difficult budget choices. With reduced state and federal support, counties have raised property taxes, shifting funding burdens onto vulnerable homeowners, highlighting a broader fiscal irresponsibility.

Off-duty Border Patrol agent shot in NY in apparent botched robbery
SUMMARY: An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot in the face and arm during a botched robbery at Fort Washington Park in New York City. The agent returned fire, injuring suspect Miguel Mora, a 21-year-old undocumented Dominican national with a violent criminal history and prior deportation order. Mora had multiple arrests for domestic violence, robbery, and stabbing. A second suspect, Christhian Aybar-Berroa, also undocumented, was later arrested. Officials emphasized the agent wasn’t targeted for his job. The incident has renewed criticism of sanctuary city policies and bail reforms, with federal authorities vowing increased immigration enforcement. The agent is recovering in stable condition.
Two people are in custody, both said to be undocumented migrants, after an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in the face after an apparent botched robbery at a New York City park on Saturday.
