SUMMARY: Rose Gilbert’s early days in Erbil involved settling logistics like securing an Iraqi phone number and exchanging currency, noting Kurdistan’s dual exchange rates favoring cash transactions. She explored the local media scene, meeting Wladimir Van Wilgenburg, head of news at the Kurdistan Chronicle, at his restaurant Le Daff—a hub for journalists. There, she connected with local reporters including fixer Suha Kamel, who helps foreign journalists navigate the complex region. Gilbert highlights the critical role and risks of fixers, who facilitate reporting in challenging areas. With global focus shifting away, many journalists have left, but those like Wladimir, Paul, and Suha remain committed long-term.

tennesseelookout.com – J. Holly McCall – 2025-05-10 13:26:00

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been conducting traffic stops and arrests in Nashville since May 4, with 84 individuals detained during a South Nashville operation. A recent traffic stop in the Madison community, documented by photojournalist John Partipilo, shows ICE agents and Tennessee Highway Patrol officers pulling over drivers. The photos capture a man being arrested and handcuffed after filling up his gas tank. These operations, referred to as “dragnets” by officials, highlight ongoing efforts by ICE to conduct sweeps in the area, with mixed reactions from the community and onlookers.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been conducting what officials term “dragnets” in Nashville since May 4, when 84 people were detained in a South Nashville sweep, a spokesperson for ICE confirmed.

Photojournalist John Partipilo on May 10 photographed a traffic stop in Nashville’s Madison community as ICE agents and Tennessee Highway Patrol officers pulled over drivers. In this photo series, Partipilo documents the detention and arrest of one man, who just pulled out of a gas station — seen in the background — after filling his tank up.

Political Bias Rating: Center-Left

The content presents a detailed visual report focused on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Nashville, highlighting the enforcement activities and the human impact of detention practices. The tone is factual but the emphasis on the “dragnet” approach and the use of imagery showing the intense nature of arrests suggests a critical perspective on aggressive immigration enforcement. This aligns more closely with center-left viewpoints that often emphasize immigration reform and scrutinize harsh enforcement tactics, without overtly politicizing or sensationalizing the issue.
