The Echoes of Remembrance: Memorial Day
SUMMARY: Memorial Day began in 1865, after the Civil War, as a solemn tribute to fallen soldiers. Newly freed African Americans in Charleston held one of the earliest commemorations by burying Union soldiers and parading in their honor. In 1868, General John A. Logan proclaimed May 30 as Decoration Day, marking the tradition of placing flowers on graves. Over time, the observance expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in service, symbolized by the red poppy. Officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1971, Memorial Day remains a poignant reminder of sacrifice and freedom, honoring the memory of those who served.

To Mow, or Not to Mow
SUMMARY: The author dislikes mowing lawns and suggests reducing lawn care through “no mow” and “less mow” options to benefit pollinators and local wildlife. Lawns, inspired by English gardens, often require constant maintenance, enforced by community ordinances. However, allowing parts of lawns to grow wild can support bees, butterflies, birds, and even reptiles like box turtles. Suggestions include mowing less frequently, setting aside small “no mow” zones cut only annually, and participating in campaigns like “No Mow May,” which encourage letting wildflowers thrive to support nature. These small steps can help communities embrace more ecologically valuable landscapes.

Flip the Script on Aging: How Mississippi Celebrates, Supports, and Empowers Older Americans
SUMMARY: May is Older Americans Month, an observance led by the Administration for Community Living to recognize older Americans’ contributions and focus on aging trends. The 2025 theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” encourages a shift in how aging is viewed. In Mississippi, 22% of the population is aged 60 or older. Harrison County Senior Services supports its aging population with seven senior centers offering activities like arts and crafts, dancing, and day trips. These services promote socialization, well-being, and independence. Other counties in Mississippi also provide similar services, including Copiah, DeSoto, and Jackson counties.
