Thanksgiving: A Tradition of Family and Food
SUMMARY: Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, filled with cherished family traditions and delicious food, thanks to my mother’s exceptional cooking. The highlight was her succulent roasted turkey, accompanied by homemade cornbread dressing and rich gravy, along with classic sides like mashed potatoes and collard greens. Meals were formal, requiring clean clothes and engaging conversations, often shared with relatives. While my Thanksgiving experiences changed in adulthood, leading to lonely meals, the essence of the holiday remains in family and gratitude. This year, I encourage everyone to embrace the holiday spirit, share with others, and appreciate what we have.

USM Graduate Students Pursue Passion for Researching Mississippi Alligator Snapping Turtles, Answering Alarming Call
SUMMARY: Dr. Luke Pearson, a USM alumnus and biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is leading efforts to conserve the alligator snapping turtle, a species potentially facing threats. Collaborating with USM graduate students, Pearson aims to gather accurate data as Mississippi holds the highest density of these turtles. His team addresses challenges like illegal harvesting and nest predation by implementing strategies such as captive egg hatching. By tracking turtle populations with radio technology and tagging hatchlings for future monitoring, Pearson hopes to improve survival rates and understand primary threats to this largest North American freshwater turtle species.
